Job Search Trends in 2026: What You Need to Know

The 2026 South African hiring market has shifted quite noticeably compared to the last few years. From my experience working closely with engineering and technical clients, hiring decisions are no longer based purely on qualifications or job titles. Instead, companies are focusing on skills-based recruitment trends in South Africa, along with how well a candidate fits into their team and working environment.

For candidates currently navigating the market, understanding these changes is important. It can significantly improve how you position yourself and ultimately how successful your job search is.

Skills-Based Hiring Is Leading the Way

One of the biggest changes I am seeing across clients is a move towards skills over titles.

In the past, job titles carried a lot of weight. Now, employers are asking:

  • What can this person actually do?
  • What systems, tools, or machinery have they worked with?
  • How quickly can they add value?

For technical and engineering roles, this means:

  • Practical experience is just as important as formal qualifications
  • Exposure to specific software, machinery, or processes matters
  • Problem-solving ability is often tested during interviews

For entry-level candidates, academic results still play a role, but they are not the only deciding factor. Clients are also looking at:

  • Your attitude and willingness to learn
  • How you communicate
  • Whether you show initiative

Remote Work vs. Office-Bound Requirements in 2026

Another noticeable trend is the ongoing discussion around remote work vs. office-bound requirements in 2026.

From what I am seeing:

  • Many engineering and technical roles still require on-site presence
  • Hands-on roles, especially in manufacturing or production, are not suited to remote work
  • However, design, project coordination, and certain technical roles are becoming more flexible

Most companies are now offering either:

  • Fully office-based roles for operational positions
  • Hybrid models for roles that allow flexibility

Importantly, clients are open to discussions around flexibility, but expectations are clear. Candidates need to understand the nature of the role before requesting remote work.

Changing Employer Expectations

Employers are becoming more specific about what they expect from candidates beyond technical ability.

The question I get asked most from clients right now is:
“Does this candidate fit into our team?”

This is where soft skills have become critical.

Soft skills South African hiring managers are asking for right now:

  • Strong communication skills – being able to clearly explain technical information
  • Time management – especially in fast-paced environments
  • Teamwork – working effectively across departments
  • Problem-solving ability – thinking independently and offering solutions
  • Adaptability – being able to adjust to new systems or environments
  • Accountability – taking ownership of your work

In many cases, I have seen candidates with slightly less experience get hired over more experienced candidates simply because they demonstrated stronger soft skills during the interview process.

Relocation Is Still Very Common

Relocation remains a strong trend in the South African market.

From my experience:

  • Johannesburg and Cape Town are still the main hubs for opportunities
  • Cape Town continues to attract a high number of candidates
  • There is also a noticeable increase in candidates looking at international opportunities, particularly in the Netherlands due to demand for skilled technical workers

Most clients are open to relocation, provided:

  • The candidate has the required skills
  • They show commitment to the move
  • They are realistic about timelines and expectations

Local Insight: A Real Example of Skills Over Titles

A good example of this shift towards skills-based hiring comes from a recent placement.

A candidate I worked with in Gauteng had experience in a slightly different industry than the role required. On paper, their job title did not align perfectly with the vacancy.

However, when we broke down their experience, they had:

  • Strong CAD and design exposure
  • Experience working with production teams
  • Proven problem-solving ability in a technical environment

Instead of focusing on their title, we positioned their transferable skills.

The client was initially hesitant, but after the interview, they saw the value immediately. The candidate secured the role and successfully transitioned into a new industry.

This is something I am seeing more often, especially in Gauteng and the Western Cape. Companies are becoming more open to candidates who can demonstrate capability, even if their background is not a perfect match.

How Candidates Should Adjust Their Job Search Strategy

Based on what I am currently seeing in the market, candidates should be focusing on the following:

  1. Highlight your skills clearly

Do not rely only on your job title. Be specific about:

  • Systems you have used
  • Projects you have worked on
  • Problems you have solved
  1. Develop your soft skills

Technical ability will get you shortlisted, but soft skills often determine whether you get the offer.

  1. Be realistic about remote work

Understand the nature of your role and align your expectations accordingly.

  1. Be open to relocation or industry changes

Opportunities often come from being flexible, whether that is location or industry.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 South African hiring market is more dynamic and skills-focused than ever before. Candidates who adapt to these changes will have a clear advantage.

To summarise:

  • Skills are becoming more important than job titles
  • Soft skills are a major deciding factor for employers
  • Remote work depends heavily on the type of role
  • Relocation and industry shifts are increasingly common

If you approach your job search with this in mind, you will be far better positioned to secure the right opportunity.
